Lockdown

So it's a week before the election, and in true Police State form, DC is now going to randomly search bags of Metro riders.

Besides being a total waste of time and money, it's yet another step in a long line of them (including the whole Department of Homeland Security) that doesn't really do anything except make people feel better. And like most of the security at the airport, it's only going to catch the really stupid terrorists.

The real problem is that we're losing basic freedoms in the process.

As the story notes, anyone who doesn't want to be searched can just refuse, and then they won't be allowed on the subway. So it's not like they're going to be putting a big dent in the non-terrorist Metro-based smuggling. Actually, I'm pretty sure there aren't any Metro-based smuggling networks. Except for maybe these guys smuggling plums.
